MIL-DTL-29183C
3.10 Fungus treatment. The distribution panels shall be given a type II treatment for
fungus resistance in accordance with MIL-T-152.
3.11 Treatment and painting. Treatment, cleaning, and painting selection and processing
shall be selected from the following options depending on the application and environment
(see 6.2). Only lead- and chromate-free materials shall be used.
3.11.1 Standard cleaning and painting option. All inside and outside surfaces of the
distribution panels, except for the electrical components installed, shall be coated. Surfaces to be
coated shall be cleaned and dried to insure that they are free from contaminants, such as oil,
grease, welding slag, loose welding splatter, loose mill scale, water, dirt, corrosion products, or
any other interfering substances. As soon as practicable after cleaning and before any corrosion
product or other coating interfering material can result, the surface shall be prepared or treated to
insure the adhesion of the coating system. The coating shall be applied to the clean dry surface
immediately after cleaning and treating. The coating shall be epoxy polyamide or polyester resin,
or equal. Electrostatic coating powder is acceptable. The total dry film thickness shall be not less
than 2.5 mils over the entire surface. The coating shall be free from runs, sags, orange peel, or
other defects. The color of the finish coat shall be green color number 14064 of FED-STD-595.
3.11.2 Chemical agent resistant coating (CARC) option. Treatment of the entire
distribution panel shall be in accordance with UFGS-09900 and as stated herein.
a. All external surfaces of the distribution panel, regardless of the material selected, shall
have a finish coat of CARC paint in green 383, color number 34094 of FED-STD-595.
1. Where applicable to the material selected, all exterior surfaces shall be painted in
accordance with UFGS-09900, table I item C for ferrous metals and table I item G for non-ferrous
metals.
2. Where the exterior material selected is not applicable to UFGS-09900 (use of
plastics or composites, as an example), the surface shall be treated as necessary for application of
the finish coat in accordance with MIL-C-46168.
b. All other distribution panel surfaces, including those within a panel housing, those
behind insulation material, and the insulation retainer, if used, shall be treated using
manufacturer's commercial practices and painted in accordance with UFGS-09900 with finish
coat of paint in accordance with MIL-PRF-24635. The finish coat color shall be green 383, color
number 34094 of FED-STD-595.
c. The following items shall not be painted: terminal wiring connections, diagrams and
plates, relays, switches, circuit interrupters, instrumentation, rubber, and all other parts whose
operation or function would be adversely affected. Insulation material shall be painted unless the
sound absorbing characteristics of the material are compromised.
